Symbiodinium IN CORAL REEFS AND ITS ADAPTATION RESPONSES TOWARD CORAL BLEACHING EVENTS: A REVIEW

نویسندگان

چکیده

Symbiodinium is a category of symbiotic dinoflagellates commonly associated with various reef-building corals. Detrimental impacts global climate change worsen the mutualistic association coral-Symbiodinium, endangering reefs to bleaching and mass mortality phenomenon. Destruction coral reef ecosystems has adverse effects not only on marine life but also human population. It been proposed that protect reefs, an exclusive selection thermal-tolerance traits in will increase survivability reefs. However, there are still limited findings coral-endosymbiont resistance under environments. Thus, this review aims introduce shortly Symbiodinium, events, as well provide brief reviews cellular molecular responses tackle thermal stress. Considering potential applications knowledge confront threat prevalence, more study especially terms by omics approaches needed enhance understanding coral-Symbiodinium tolerance toward change, particularly heat

Coral diseases and bleaching on Colombian Caribbean coral reefs.

Since 1998 the National Monitoring System for the Coral Reefs of Colombia (SIMAC) has monitored the occurrence of coral bleaching and diseases in some Colombian coral reefs (permanent stations at San Andres Island, Rosario Islands, Tayrona, San Bernardo Islands and Urabá). The main purpose is to evaluate their health status and to understand the factors that have been contributing to their decl...

The condition of coral reefs in South Florida (2000) using Coral disease and bleaching as indicators.

The destruction of coral reef habitats has occurred at unprecedented levels during the last three decades. Coral disease and bleaching in the Caribbean and South Florida have caused extensive coral mortality with limited recovery, often coral reefs are being replaced with turf algae. Acroporids were once dominant corals and have diminished to the state where they are being considered as endange...

Boring sponges, an increasing threat for coral reefs affected by bleaching events

Coral bleaching is a stress response of corals induced by a variety of factors, but these events have become more frequent and intense in response to recent climate-change-related temperature anomalies. We tested the hypothesis that coral reefs affected by bleaching events are currently heavily infested by boring sponges, which are playing a significant role in the destruction of their physical...

Status of Coral Reefs

There has been significant bleaching of hard and soft corals in widely separate parts of the world from mid-1997 to the last months of 1998. Much of this bleaching coincided with a large El Niño event, immediately switching over to a strong La Niña. Some of the reports by experienced observers are of unprecedented bleaching in places as widespread as (from west to east) the Middle East, East Af...
